My work springs from a life long search for universal spiritual truths and ultimately a way of Being. This search led into eastern thought and philosophy, quantum physics, meditation, yoga, spiritual teachers and ultimately a journey that led me back home to Self.
"A beggar had been sitting by the side of the road for over thirty years. One day a stranger walked by. “Spare some change?” mumbled the beggar, mechanically holding out his old baseball cap. “I have nothing to give you,” said the stranger. Then he asked: “What’s that you are sitting on?” “Nothing,” replied the beggar. “Just an old box. I have been sitting on it for as long as I can remember.” “Ever looked inside?” asked the stranger. “No,” said the beggar. “What’s the point? There’s nothing in there.” “Have a look inside,” insisted the stranger. The beggar managed to pry open the lid. With astonishment, disbelief, and elation, he saw that the box was filled with gold.” When we have not found our true wealth, the radiant joy of Being and the deep unshakable peace that comes with it, we are like beggars, even if we have great material wealth. I kept looking outside for a little pleasure or fulfillment, for validation, security or love, while the real treasure was within and not only included all of the above but was ultimately greater than anything the world could offer. “Between the moonlight and the foliage Between the stillness and th grove Between the night’s being and the breeze, A secret passes My soul follows as it passes.” Fernando Pessoa
My paintings flow from this inner stillness as well as my love of poetry and music and color which aids me in my travels inward. I see colors when I listen to music and so for me it has become a language that expresses my deepest emotions and inner knowing. Each nuance of color has a different timbre and vibration that reflect the harmony I feel and experience in the Universe.
“Generally speaking, color directly influences the soul, color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another purposefully, to cause vibrations in the soul.”
Wassily Kandinsky
I also find the relationship between art and physics compelling. Space and time constitute the grid in which I work. Inside this frame, energy, matter and various combinations there of create my forms. These forms create a Mandala of stillness. These perceptions are created in the dream room of this stillness. The quintessential element being Light. It connects all things; that is the constant and immutable stuff of the stars. Conceiving of a painted surface where the Light is conceived as a universe with it’s own inner light, constructed by creating light as surface (at), volume (into), and film (through). Ultimately, I do not prepare for a certain response nor do I consider the response but simply I follow my inspiration.
